As part of Central America Week 2002, The Watershed will be showing "Y tu mama tambien," a Mexican road movie set against
the background of the results of globalisation, on the 20th of March. US did some research, and here's a breif synopsis....
"Y Tu Mama Tambien" (translated from Spanish as "And Your Mother Too") is a funny, provocative, sexy journey into intimacy ad youth set in Mexico City. With their girlfriends off to Italy, two hormone-ridden teenagers, Tenoch (Diego Luna) and Julio (Gael Garcia Bernal), become infatuated with Luisa (Maribel Verdu), an older, married woman of 28. Tenoch is the son of a wealthy but corrupt politician and a frivolous high-society lady. Julio has been raised by a single mother, in a more humble, middle class environment. His sister is a left-wing activist in Mexico City. Luisa is an orphan from Spain, married to one of Tenoch's cousins. When she finds out her husband has been cheating on her, the three enter into an exploration of sexual identity and intimacy.
The film mingles moods well, combining the heartbreaking with the lewd, death with desire, and fearlessly pointing out that the best we have is also generally quite embarassing. Tenoch and Julio's growing up is painfully funny to watch, and Luisa's outgoing lust for life has dark roots. The mood is also shaped by the numerous poetic asides about politics, history, life, love and the human condition. AND, there's also a voice-over narration that adds information at the fringes of the story and extends its reach by sketching the lives of minor characters - including a ravaging band of wild pigs!
The film's sex scenes sum up Alfonso Cuaron's take on life quiet nicely: it's freewheeling and spontaneous, a bit outrageous, interrupted by giggles and groans, and it's all too human, flabby butts and all.
With this "road movie," writers Alfonso and Carlos Cuaron take us by the hand through not only the hilarious adventures and misadventures of this unlikely group, but, with the help of the narrator, we're also offered the sociopolitical context in which the characters live. Their level of discourse, subtitled or not, peaks with "Left-wing chicks are hot, dude." "Y Tu Mama Tambien" is a bit like "Tenoch and Julio's Excellent Adventure."
