For anyone who made a New Year resolution to recycle more this year, Bristol’s Rubbish Revolution has rung up yet another recycling idea. Millions of mobile phones are bought and sold, especially over the festive period, so where do all the old ones go? Most of them have just ended up going to rubbish bins - what a waste. No longer - now there is a way to get them to people who would welcome the use of them.
The Rubbish Revolution Bristol’s campaign to encourage people to reduce their waste has joined forces with CRUMP (campaign to recycle unwanted mobile phones). CRUMP recycle or recondition donated broken or working phones and sell them on to people in developing countries. The money they make from the sale of the phones goes to help children’s hospitals.
"In England, mobile phones are often thrown away not because they are broken but because they have gone out of fashion. In developing countries people don’t really care if they have the latest technology or not they just want phones that work!" said Meggie Szczesny from CRUMP. It is especially valuable if phones can be donated with the batteries and chargers too," she said.
"It’s a win, win situation - recycling phones helps the environment by reducing waste and Children’s hospitals also benefit because of the increased funding," said Megggie. "It’s great to have the support of the Rubbish Revolution in Bristol. People with unwanted mobile phones can either ring the Recycling Helpline on 0117 9031221 to find out the freepost address to send them to or they can take old phones to the reception at the CREATE Centre on Smeaton Road; where there is a collection box. Its that easy!"
